I dig Caroline and her work, but I think she gets it wrong when it comes to SF vs NYC. It’s not that fashion, media and finance somehow make it harder for tech to “rise” the way it does in California. Here in NYC, fashion, media, finance and tech all intersect on the same level. There is far more interaction and crossover between all these worlds. The tech scene isn’t smaller; there is simply no particular scene to begin with. There are a thousand crossover social circles of people in blog-media-finance and fashion-media-vlogging and film-arts-tech… and nobody swims in one particular pool here.
To use her analogy, to me it is San Francisco which always seems more like high school because the tech world there seems far more concerned with who is and isn’t cool to begin with. Here in NYC, at least in my experience, there is no uncool place to be or scene to occupy unless you apply that perspective yourself.
