I love all kinds of art and artists but I have a special place in my heart for musicians, most particularly composers. There is little in the world as totally engaging (and distracting) to me as music. It can change a mood, inspire a movement, calm a baby, make me dance all night long or make me scream in pain and rage. And while I played music for years, I have never been able to compose. To me it is a mysterious and magical art.
I also get massive crushes on people with big active brains. Geeks of all kinds just make me swoon. Given that there’s a big overlap between math and music, it’s no surprise that there’s an endless pool of geeky composers who make me feel all silly inside.
High up on my list of celebrity crushes is sexy geek Jonathan Coulton. It helps that I was first introduced to him through this great fan-made video for his song “Mandelbrot Set,” which I encountered while working on a film about fractals. You all probably know who he is, but if you don’t: He’s not only an awesome songwriter, he’s publishing under creative commons. I love his sense of humor (check out “Soft Rocked By Me”) but he’s can also be so sweet (”Drinking With You”).
Today is Jonathan Coulton Day in my world because I am going to a zombie birthday party tonight (”Celebrating 34 years of being alive… That’s 34 years of being undead!”) and “re: Your Brains” has been running through my head for days now. Then late last night he twittered that he’s in SF — doing a benefit tonight for 826 Valencia! (more on that place in another post). There are many more reasons that he’s geeky and awesome. You’ll see.
Ah, Jonathan (if I may call you that). You truly are one of the Sexiest Geeks Alive.

I think it would be way cool if you started a polling type deal here. So there would be two or three candidates and we vote for the sexiest.
